The Foundation is a non-stock corporation chartered under the laws of Virginia and recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a non-profit charitable organization under the provisions of Section 501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Service Code.
The Kiwanis Club of Poquoson Foundation is an independent organization separate from the Kiwanis Club of Poquoson. All Club members are automatically members of the Foundation. The Foundation Board of Directors is made up of 7 active club members. The Foundation Board of Directors are elected to two-year terms by the members of the Club at an annual meeting of the Club. The officers of the Foundation are elected from within the Foundation Board of Directors at the Foundation board meeting following the election of board members. The Foundation board meetings are held on a quarterly basis.
The foundation’s mission is to provide support for the most pressing needs in the greater Hampton Roads area community with a primary focus on young people.
Funds received by the Foundation include:
- Funds through United Way from donors who specify on their annual pledge card that they want their donations to go to the Foundation.
- Gifts made by Kiwanians, their relatives and friends for the purpose of honoring or in remembrance of a Kiwanian or loved one.
- Funds are received from the public including companies or organizations who desire to support the Foundation and its efforts.
